Ralph Gorton's journey in athletics began at Joel Barlow High School in Connecticut, where he excelled in both basketball and track and field. He finished his basketball career with 1,218 points, earned All-New England recognition as a senior, and later
entered the Joel Barlow Athletic Hall of Fame. As a track athlete, he competed across multiple events and won six individual conference titles, establishing himself early as a versatile, driven competitor.
Gorton continued his basketball career at Central Connecticut State University. As a senior, he captained the Blue Devils and ranked among Connecticut collegiate leaders in scoring, rebounding, and assists. He earned a bachelor's degree in geography and carried the discipline, preparation, and team-first mentality of his playing career into coaching.
